28 foot tall Canadian Goose- Wawa, Ontario

This photo is of the famous Wawa, Ontario landmark – A 8.53m/28f tall metal structure of a Canadian Goose, designed by Dick Vanderlift and built in 1960 to commemorate the last link of the Trans-Canada Highway linking Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie and Western Canada.

Why a Canadian goose you may ask? Wawa (the town’s name) is Ojibway for “Wild Goose”!

Upsala Mosquito

How big can the mosquitos get in Northern Ontario…? Big enough to take you home to the nest! Built in 1997 by Ken Gaudette, Don Belmore, Lori Ashinnabie. The man is 1.8m (6feet), and the mosquito 4.9m long (16feet) by 4.6m on the wingspan (15feet).

Sprinkler in the Trees

Photo of apple trees getting a watering early in the season. In August the sprinklers are on all day and night, quite the soothing sound while sleeping outdoors!

Under the Cherry Tree

Our home for the summer held up well under the cherry trees. We rolled it up at the end of September, ending 3 months of sleeping outdoors! You get an incredible sleep, though we did have to be aware of skunks, chickens, snakes, falling cherries and a neighbourhood bear!

Mackies – Port Stanley

Our weekly picture this week is of Mackies restaurant, their sign was such a great mix of colours it was hard to resist.

Besides the wicked sign, they have the usual list of classic beach food along with their own delicious version of ketchup. We sometimes drive the hour just for the fries and a huge helping of Mackie ketchup. The ketchup is something similar to sweet and sour sauce… but oh so much better!

Land of Ogopogo

Ogopogo Stamp

While poking around for things to do in the Okanagan valley, we realized we’ll be sharing the lake with Canada’s most famous lake monster…  ”Ogopogo”/”N’ha-a-tik”(Lake Demon).

If the name is unfamiliar to you, Ogopogo is a lake monster similar to the Loch Ness. It’s rumoured to be up to 15 meters long and look similar to a serpent/dinosaur. The legend has been passed down by aboriginals who claim to have seen the lake demon long before Europeans settled the area in the late 19th century.

Given the size of the lake, 130kms long by 3-4kms wide and depth of 232 meters at the deepest point, it’s hard not to see how such a legend could come to existence.

It certainly has grabbed our attention, over the last day or so we couldn’t help but research the monster that may be lurking under our feet during an afternoon dip in the lake.

Entrance to Cave Villa – Batu Caves, Malaysia

This week’s photo is of a colourful stone carving at the entrance to Cave Villa located at Batu Caves north of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We were inspired to take this shot after seeing a (better) photo on Wikipedia taken by Loke Seng Hon of the photo blog and travelogue site MyloIsmyLife.

The Amuse-O-Matic Centre

The last time we were through Toronto we stumbled upon this arcade on the bottom floor of Union Station. The arcade games look like fun but the sign just doesn’t seem to sell it. For some reason we imagine robots forcing us to be amused… or is it just us?

Canadian Geese and Goslings at the park

Canadian GoslingsDuring our wedding anniversary a few weeks ago we took a stroll through Waterworks park in St.Thomas, Ontario.

Just after we entered, these Canadian Geese and their goslings were nibbling away at the grass and resting on the bank of the pond.

The parents seemed unconcerned about us when we stayed still, but we kept a close eye to ensure they weren’t agitated… last thing we would want is a goose chasing us around.
